Complexity is the Enemy of Security

The more complicated a system is, the greater the chance becomes that something might go wrong, and the harder the system is to understand, operate, and maintain. With many different interacting subsystems, it's easy to make a mistake in configuration that opens up a hole. If maintenance is a chore, then it's more likely that a necessary patch won't get applied in time.

Basically, the system should be as simple as possible (but no simpler!)
