This Only Gets You So Far

Concealing or lying about your software versions does help keep your system safe, but it can't be your only line of defense. For one thing, worms usually don't bother to check who they are attacking - ask any Linux webmaster how many worms try to find CMD.EXE on their servers. Also, a determined attacker can usually find a way to figure out this information.

So while this is important, it's only part of an overall security strategy.
